Hip-hop is more than just music, Qwel said. Qwel would take paint from the hardware store he worked at and stay out all night, writing graffiti. Originally from Chicago, Qwel has been in the game since hip-hop went big in the early ’80s.
Giannattasio is not a professional booker, but makes a special effort to get hip-hop artists to perform in Chico. Qwel’s music reached across the country to Chico State alumnus Mike Giannattasio, who booked the show. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Ten local sponsors pitched in to make the all-ages show happen. Reminiscent of Paul Simon and sounding a little like Don McLean, Nutini kicks things off with a reggae groove ("Ten Out of Ten") and continues on through a dozen endlessly optimistic tunes, ranging from the New Orleans stomp of "Pencil Full of Lead" to the fluttering flutes of "High Hopes."
